Ottawa native making it in the dance world

A 19 year old Ottawa woman is climbing the fame ladder in the big apple, one pli at a time.

Nicole Adjeleian was born to a family of dancers. At just three years old, she started classes at the Canadian School of Dance, though Adjeleian jokes she’s been dancing since she was in the womb.

In 2012, not long after turning 18, Adjeleian was accepted to The Ailey School, a well known dance school in New York City. Knowing she couldn’t stay home forever, she packed her bags and left to pursue her dreams.

The transition was a tough one at first for the young woman, whose mother and aunt own the Canadian School of Dance here in Ottawa.

The hardest adjustment, said Adjeleian, was “going from being the owner’s daughter and being the oldest in the school to starting over.”

“No one knows you, no one cares as much as they did there. Especially with such a wide variety of people here, it’s such a big school,” Adjeleian told the Ottawa Sun from New York.

But she settled in, started chasing a dream and hasn’t looked back since.

“As tough of a transition as it was, it was so worth it. The training here is incredible,” she said. “It’s been suc Skechers On Sale h an amazing experience, unlike anything else really, being in New York City.”

On Feb. 28, Adjeleian was able to return to Ottawa for the first Dancers Give Back event in Canada, though it has been running a few years Skechers On Sale in Buffalo and Dallas. All proceeds from the show, which was held in the Algonquin College Commons Theater, went to The Candlelighters.

“It was really awesome,” she Skechers On Sale said. “Just being able to dance for a cause and raise money for something, and having everyone come together.”

Adjeleian is also an apprentice with pre professional dance troupe Phoenix Project Dance, a group travelling the world putting on shows. And while Adjeleian isn’t a full time member yet and hasn’t gone on extensive tours, she will be coming home to Ottawa to perform with them.

The Phoenix Project Dance is set to perform at the Commons Theater on March 22. Adjeleian is excited for the homecoming, but also for more opportunities to perform with them.

“They really are leaders and they take on so much. Their talent is incredible,” she said. “I could sit and watch them all day and learn so much.”

It’s obvious Adjeleian is making the most of her time in New York City, which the young woman hopes will one day lead to her ultimate dream Taking over her mom’s studio, and touring the world with a major dance production.
